Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese or Eastern medicine practice for the relief of illness and pain. Traditional Eastern practitioners (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) believe acupuncture unblocks and balances the energy (chi or qi), which flows through the body along pathways called meridians. Western practitioners think that acupuncture minimizes pain through biological mechanisms, such as stimulating the hypothalamus and pituitary gland or causing change in neurotransmitters, hormones and immune function. Caliber Pain™ offers acupuncture as one of our treatment modalities, available at our medical facility in Midtown Manhattan.
Does Acupuncture Work?
This age-old practice is now viewed as an acceptable treatment for certain low back pain, neck pain and osteoarthritis. Benefits have been seen with many other conditions like nerve pain (shingles rashes), headaches, fibromyalgia and menstrual cramps.
Acupuncture can be used to treat the following:
- Neck pain
- Lower back and chronic back pain
- Muscle spasms
- Osteoarthritis
- Hip pain
- Tennis Elbow
- Migraines and headaches
- Infertility
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Stress-Control
- Insomnia
- Nausea and vomiting
- Gastrointestinal Issues
- Respiratory Disorders
- Circulatory Problems
During the acupuncture procedure, thin round-tipped needles are inserted into specific parts of the body. After the needles are placed, they may be rolled slightly, or the practitioner may use heat or electrical current on them. Typically, 4-10 needles will be inserted and left in place for 10-30 minutes while you rest. A usual course of treatment includes 6-12 sessions over a three-month period.
Yes! Acupuncture is safe when performed by specially trained, experienced and certified providers. Our doctor is NY State licensed for acupuncture, Harvard-trained and a triple board certified anesthesiologist.
