Back Pain New York NY

Any type of back pain can be immobilizing and can hold you back from experiencing a high quality of life. Sciatica is especially concerning and can be linked to higher rates of obesity, strokes, hypertension and heart disease. Below are some surprising reasons you could be experiencing sciatica, as well as some ways you can heal so you can get back to the life you love.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, which runs down your legs from the lower back. The pain can be excruciating, which can make everyday tasks difficult. Sciatica usually begins with a herniated disk in your lower spine. When a disk begins to wear down, the soft part in the center of the disk can push out from the disk and put pressure on the sciatic nerve. This pain can come on quickly or develop over time, depending on whether the disk is injured or worn down from years of use.

Causes of Sciatica

Disk herniation is the most common cause of sciatica, but there are other reasons you could be experiencing sciatic pain:

  • Trauma – a sports injury, car accident or fall could put pressure on the sciatic nerve
  • A desk job – sitting too much can cause the lumbar disks to compress
  • Your shoe choices – high heels push body weight forward, which then causes your body to compensate by pushing your lower back out. This can cause extra pressure on lumbar disks.
  • Constricting clothing – Tight clothing can cut off circulation, especially if you sit at a desk all day. Be sure to take breaks throughout the day to increase circulation.
