Treatments for Lumbar Sprains and Strains

Injuries to the musculoskeletal system in the back are common, including sprains and strains. Most people have suffered a mild or moderate back muscle strain that can leave them sore and stiff for a few days. When more severe back strains or sprains occur, it can be debilitating. If you have an acute thoracic or lumbar soft tissue injury, Caliber Pain™ offers treatments for back sprains and strains at our clinic in New York City.

Difference Between Sprains and Strains

Back sprains and strains can occur together or separately. Sprains occur when ligaments are damaged due to overstretching or tearing. Strains are when muscles or tendons are injured during overexertion while bending, twisting or lifting. Both can cause pain and inflammation in the soft tissues in the upper and lower back. Most back sprains and strains occur due to overuse or exertion. Sprains occur when the spinal joints move suddenly out of the normal position, stretching the ligaments holding them in place. Strains may occur when lifting, playing sports or due to repeated use of the same muscles and tendons.

Relief from Thoracic or Lumbar Back Injuries

Both back strains and sprains can cause intense pain, especially when you try to move. You may also experience muscle spasms. To regain mobility and reduce pain, treatment may include trigger point injections, acupuncture, physical therapy and other conservative therapies. Most back sprains and strains can heal within two weeks, and more severe injuries may require treatment and longer recovery.

If you have a severe musculoskeletal back injury and live or work in New York City, come see our pain specialists at Caliber Pain™. We offer innovative, interventional and regenerative medicine at our clinic, and effective treatments for back sprains and strains.
