PRP Injections for Pain Relief
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that takes your own blood and concentrates its healing properties by isolating the plasma rich in growth and healing factors into a serum. A small amount of blood is drawn and then spun to separate the platelets from the other cells. These substances recruit reparative cells and enhance the healing process. Caliber Pain™ uses PRP injections for pain relief at our clinic in New York City.
The highly concentrated mixture of platelets, plasma and other factors is then injected in a very precise fashion, under ultrasound and/or x-ray guidance, into damaged ligaments, tendons, discs and joints. This injection promotes tissue repair and accelerates healing.
PRP is a very safe treatment, as it is from your own blood. There is no known risk of rejection or allergic reactions. Usually, patients notice substantial improvement about a month after treatment and achieve optimum results 3 to 6 months after treatment.
PRP Injections – What to Expect
You should avoid anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen, for four to six weeks after a therapeutic injection with PRP while the injury heals. This is because the biologic material that is injected stimulates the body’s inflammatory response, which is an important part of healing. If the injection site is sore, we may recommend over-the-counter acetaminophen and applying an ice pack for 15 minutes at a time, three times a day. Avoid strenuous activities four weeks after an injection to give the injured tissue time to heal.
We will evaluate the healing process in 4 to 6 weeks and may recommend an additional PRP injection. This is depending on the extent of the damage to your joint, and the amount of relief you experience.
