Trigger Point Injections
A trigger point (myofascial pain) is a tender area in a muscle that causes generalized musculoskeletal pain when overstimulated. They are painful “knots” that form when a muscle can’t relax. Quite often, they can be felt under the skin. Caliber Pain™ in Midtown Manhattan offers treatment for trigger pain, or myofascial pain, including trigger point injections.
Myofascial pain is a chronic, painful condition affecting the connective tissue that covers the muscles (fascia). Myofascial pain syndrome can involve a single muscle or a group of muscles.
Trigger point injections are an effective treatment modality for inactivating trigger points and providing prompt relief from symptoms of myofascial pain syndrome. Trigger point injections can help soothe the muscle pain in your arms, legs, lower back and neck that stems from these knots or inflammation. It also can be used to treat fibromyalgia and tension headaches.
A small amount of anesthetic and steroid is injected into the trigger point. You will sit or lie down for the procedure. Our doctor will palpitate your muscles to locate the area where you have pain. Then, he or she will insert a small needle into the area and administer a mixture of anesthetic and steroid. You can have several trigger points treated during one visit. The procedure only takes a few minutes.
You can actively use your muscle immediately after the procedure. However, you should avoid strenuous activity for the first few days.
If your muscle pain has not improved with other treatment modalities, including pain medication and physical therapy, trigger point injections may be right for you. Our pain specialists may recommend trigger point injections combined with other treatment options to give you relief from your myofascial pain.
If you have knotted, painful muscles, trigger point injections may be one option to give you relief. Contact our team at Caliber Pain™ in New York City to discuss treatment for myofascial pain.
