Degenerative Disc Disease Treatment

The spinal discs offer cushion and support for the vertebrae of the spine. When spinal discs deteriorate, due to injury and degenerative factors, they may no longer perform as needed. Pain and symptoms related to disc deterioration are referred to as degenerative disc disease, a common cause of neck and lower back pain. Caliber Pain™ in New York City, offers degenerative disc disease treatment for neck and back pain relief.

Each spinal disc is under pressure when the spine moves, twists and bends, especially the discs in the neck (cervical) and lower (lumbar) spine. Spinal discs have a tough outside layer that protects a softer, gel-like inside. Degenerative disc disease is not one particular disc disease but a collection of symptoms that occur when the spinal discs deteriorate from injury and aging. Discs can become thinner, flatter and brittle, providing less support and cushion. Symptoms of degenerative disc disease can include:

  • Numbness or tingling in legs, arms, fingers or feet
  • Pain that is worse when bending, lifting or twisting the neck or back
  • Radiating pain into shoulder/arms or down the buttocks/legs
  • Pain that dissipates when changing spinal positions or when lying down
  • Moderate to severe neck or lower back pain that comes and goes

Degenerative disc disease can occur when spinal discs lose moisture when aging, becoming more brittle and flatter. Trauma can cause damage to the outer layer of spinal discs that contain nerves, resulting in pain, or the deteriorated discs can protrude and cause pain through nerve pressure.

Relieving Spinal Disc Pain
