Piriformis Muscle Injection for Pain Relief

The piriformis muscle is attached to the sacrum in the pelvis, helping to stabilize the hip joint and rotate the leg outward. The sciatic nerves pass underneath or near the piriformis muscle and down to the leg. If the piriformis muscle is inflamed or swollen, it can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing leg pain, numbness or weakness. Caliber Pain™ offers piriformis muscle injections for pain relief at our medical facility in Midtown Manhattan.

Sciatic nerve pain is often caused by pressure on the nerve root in the lumbar spine. It can also be caused by the piriformis muscle, creating pain in the groin and leg. Sciatic nerve pain will usually only affect one side of the body, with pain in the buttock and radiating down into the leg. Some people may experience rectum or reproductive organ pain. To relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve, a piriformis muscle injection for pain relief can be performed.

Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief Treatment

If there is inflammation or swelling that is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve in the pelvis, local anesthesia and a long-lasting steroid can be injected into the piriformis muscle by one of our physicians. The local anesthetic can offer immediate pain relief by numbing the area. The steroid may take 3-4 days to begin relieving inflammation to offer pain relief. Other treatments may be recommended in combination with the piriformis muscle injection, such as physical therapy. Some patients may need repeated injection treatments to relieve inflammation.

Sciatic nerve pain can impact your mobility and comfort. If you have sciatic nerve pain caused by piriformis muscle inflammation, contact our pain specialists at Caliber Pain™. We offer effective interventional pain treatments at our clinic in UES New York City. Contact our clinic to schedule a same day diagnostic and treatment appointment.
