Knee Genicular Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation

The genicular nerves send sensation signals from the knee to the spinal cord and brain, including pain from inflammation and joint problems. One type of interventional treatment for chronic knee pain is knee genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation, blocking the pain signals from the knee to the brain. Caliber Pain™ offers effective knee pain treatments, including knee genicular nerve blocks and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) at our medical facility in UES New York City.

Knee genicular nerve RFA is used to disable the pain signals sent from the knee to relieve pain. Radiofrequency ablation uses heat energy directed to the targeted nerves to impact or block pain signals. The heat energy is delivered through an image guided needle to the specific genicular nerves in the knee area that transmit pain from both sides of the upper knee and on the lower side of the knee. The procedure may include multiple injections to deliver radiofrequency heat energy to the targeted nerves.

Is Knee RFA Treatment Right for You?

In most cases, we perform a knee genicular nerve block to determine whether knee RFA treatment will be successful. A knee genicular nerve block injection delivers local anesthetic to the nerves to block knee pain signals. If the nerve block treatment is effective, knee genicular nerve RFA may offer longer lasting results. Knee genicular nerve RFA is used to relieve chronic knee pain, including pain from osteoarthritis.

The RFA procedure is completed on an outpatient basis in our state-of-the-art medical facility in Midtown Manhattan. Many patients prefer sedation to reduce any pain during the treatment, which requires an adult to accompany you when you leave our facility. Most people can return to work and normal activities the next day.

If you are interested in minimally-invasive options for relieving chronic knee pain, come visit our pain specialists at Caliber Pain™. We offer advanced interventional treatments for pain management, including knee genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation at our clinic in NYC.
