Back Muscle Spasm and Strain Treatment

The muscles in the back support the spine and torso that are put under strain from lifting, bending, twisting and other upper body movements. Injuries to the musculoskeletal system in the back, including muscle strains and ligament sprains, are common, but often heal quickly with rest and conservative treatment. If you have lasting back muscle pain or muscle spasms, you may need treatment for pain relief and healing. Caliber Pain™ offers back muscle spasm and strain treatment at our clinic in Midtown, New York City.

What Causes Muscle Spasms?

Muscle strain is simply a tear in the muscle from overexertion or stretching too far. Rest is needed to allow the muscle to heal. Physical therapy may be recommended to strengthen the muscles and ligaments to prevent future injuries. When a back-muscle spasm occurs, it can be in conjunction with a soft tissue or muscle strain. Muscle spasms occur to protect an injured area, either from a muscle or ligament tear or a mechanical spine issue.

Back muscle spasms can be mild or severe. In the most severe form, back muscle spasms are debilitating. The pain can be intense and cause extreme weakness in the affected area. If related to a muscle strain, muscle spasms may dissipate as the muscle heals. If it is an underlying spinal condition, muscle spasms can repeatedly occur in the same region.

Rest and conservative pain management are the first option in back muscle spasm and strain treatment. Physical therapy and injection therapy may be recommended for more severe injuries. If back muscle spasms are reoccurring, there may be an underlying spinal condition triggering the spasms that needs to be addressed. Our pain specialists at Caliber Pain™ can perform advanced diagnostics to determine the cause of chronic back muscle spasms and create a treatment plan for relief.
