Sciatica Pain Treatment

The sciatic nerves send signals to the spinal cord and brain from the lower back, buttocks, legs and feet. Two sciatic nerves exit the lumbar spine and travel through the pelvis, one to each leg. Sciatica pain refers to a set of symptoms that can occur when either of the sciatic nerves is compressed or irritated, especially at the nerve root in the spine. Caliber Pain™ offers advanced diagnosis and sciatica pain treatment for our patients at our clinic in UES, New York City.

Symptoms of Sciatic Nerve Impingement

In most cases, only one sciatic nerve is affected with sciatica. Symptoms are generally only felt on one side of the body, which can help identify or diagnose sciatic nerve pain. Symptoms of sciatica, or sciatic nerve root impingement, can include:

  • Lower back pain
  • Radiating pain or burning through one side of buttocks and/or leg
  • Weakness, numbness or tingling sensation radiating down the buttock, leg and foot
  • Worsening pain when standing, sitting or coughing

Sciatica is usually caused from inflammation or pressure on the sciatic nerve root in the spinal space. This can be caused by a herniated lumbar disc, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis or vertebrae damage. Impingement can also occur further down the nerve in the pelvic region. Piriformis syndrome can also cause sciatica-type symptoms, but it mostly impacts the pelvic region and associated leg.

Relieving Sciatica Symptoms

Sciatica is not a condition but a set of symptoms. Treating sciatica must involve identifying the cause of nerve compression and relieving pressure on the nerve. This can include conservative treatments such as losing weight, physical therapy and OTC medications to relieve pain or inflammation. When conservative treatments are ineffective, our pain specialists can determine the source of nerve pressure and a treatment plan to offer long-term relief.

Sciatica pain is one of the most common complaints, affecting millions of people each year. If you suffer from sciatic nerve pain, come see our experts at Caliber Pain™ in Midtown Manhattan. We can accurately diagnose the cause of your sciatica and create a treatment plan to give you pain relief.
