Treatment for Shoulder Bursitis and Tendonitis
Both bursitis and tendonitis are common causes of shoulder pain. When the tendons or bursae in the shoulder are inflamed, they can cause pain and limit shoulder function. If you have ongoing shoulder discomfort, you may be suffering from shoulder bursitis, tendonitis or other conditions. Caliber Pain™ offers effective interventional treatment for shoulder bursitis and tendonitis at our medical facility in UES New York City.
What Is Shoulder Bursitis?
The shoulder contains several bursae, fluid-filled sacs that provide a cushion between bones and other tissues. When bursae become irritated or inflamed, it is called bursitis, a condition that can cause pain and limit joint function. Shoulder bursitis can occur with any of the bursa in the shoulder, but most commonly, it occurs with the subacromial bursa that is situated between the acromion (shoulder bone) and rotator cuff. Symptoms include pain on the outside of your shoulder, which can become worse when lifting the arm above the head or lying on the shoulder when sleeping.
What Is Shoulder Tendonitis?
The shoulder relies on the muscles and tendons in the rotator cuff for full movement. When the rotator cuff tendons become inflamed from irritation or injury, it is called shoulder tendonitis. This can be caused by overstretching or overusing the tendons. Most tendonitis occurs in those who perform repeated overhead movements, like commercial painters, swimmers, tennis players and baseball players. Symptoms include localized shoulder pain, combined with weakness, when holding the arm in certain positions.
Both shoulder bursitis and tendonitis cause pain and functional issues that can also be signs of other shoulder conditions. It is vital to have a proper diagnosis to determine the cause of pain and what treatment is needed.
