If you have been experiencing knee pain or discomfort, your specialist at Caliber Pain™ may have recommended knee injection therapy. This type of treatment involves the injection of medication directly into the knee joint to help alleviate pain and improve joint function. Knee injections can be used to treat various conditions, such as swollen bursa, pinched nerves, inflammation or damaged soft tissue.

Here’s what you can expect from knee injections at Caliber Pain™ in NYC.

Professional Consultation

Before undergoing knee injection therapy, you will need to undergo an initial consultation with one of our knee injection specialists. During this consultation, your medical history will be reviewed, and you will be asked questions about your knee pain and symptoms. Your knee specialist will also perform a physical examination and may order imaging tests, such as an X-ray or MRI, to help determine the underlying cause of your knee pain.

After a diagnosis has been made, your knee specialist will discuss the treatment options available to you, including knee injection therapy. They will explain the different types of knee injections and the benefits and risks associated with each type.

Types of Knee Injections

There are several different types of knee injections that may be used to treat knee pain and improve joint function. These include:

  1. Hyaluronic Acid – Viscosupplementation: This type of injection involves the injection of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body, into the knee joint. The goal of this injection is to improve the lubrication of the joint and reduce inflammation.
  2. Knee Bursa Injection: This type of injection is used to treat swollen bursa, which are small sacs of fluid that cushion the knee joint. The injection helps to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
  3. Knee Genicular Nerve Block: This type of injection is used to block the nerves that transmit pain signals from the knee joint to the brain. The injection helps to alleviate pain and improve joint function.
  4. Knee Genicular Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation: This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to destroy the nerves that transmit pain signals from the knee joint. The procedure helps to alleviate pain and improve joint function.
  5. Knee Joint Steroid Injection: This type of injection involves the injection of corticosteroids, a type of medication that helps to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.

The Procedure

On the day of the procedure, you will be asked to lie down on a table, and our knee injection specialist will clean the injection site. Depending on the type of injection you are receiving, the specialist may use an ultrasound or image-guided approach to ensure that the medication is delivered directly to the precise area of the knee.

The injection itself may cause some discomfort or pain, but this is usually temporary. After the injection, you may be advised to rest for a period of time and avoid strenuous activities for a few days. After undergoing knee injection therapy, you may experience some discomfort or pain at the injection site. You can treat this with OTC pain medication as needed.

Knee injection therapy can be an effective treatment option for knee pain and discomfort. If you have been recommended for knee injection therapy, it is important to discuss the benefits and risks of the procedure with our knee specialist. Contact Caliber Pain™ in New York to learn more.
